This listening process based on the Book of Needs includes an example of how the Deck of Needs can be used to improve "professional" listening.

The Book of Needs

The Book of Needs contains three (yet unwritten) books into one:

With the new simple, 6 step framework for listening, we managed to make a comprehensive book that includes many of the ideas and guidelines about empathy and communication we encountered ourselves and added some new powerful guidelines based on our work as trainer, facilitator, coach and mediator in Africa, Asia and Europe. It builds upon the wisdom of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) first created by Marshall Rosenberg in the 1960s and further developed by him and many other trainers around the world. We think that the clear structure of our approach combined with the many guidelines in this book will increase the quality of listening for everyone who works or wants to work as a professional listener.

The Book of Needs has the biggest impact when combined with the trainings and other tools Kommunikasie offers. In the book we show (for instance) the importance of 'being present', what can take you away from staying present and what may help to regain enough presence. It takes however the interaction with others to see, where YOUR level of presence is insufficient and what YOU can do to go (back) to the level that you aim to achieve. Training and coaching can help you to reach a higher level. The Book of Needs offers a reminder of things to learn, things to be repeated and things you've already learned. As reminder it can be read again and again.
